05 JAPAN STUDIES
This theory work aims to dive into, derive and understand traditional, wooden Japanese
architecture.
Both Norway and Japan have long and rich
traditions of wooden architecture. As Norwegian
architecture students, we felt a desire to learn
more about our own wooden building tradition, and at
the same time explore the sensible,
Japanese approach to tectonics. Through literature, case studies
and a study trip to Japan, we
increased our insight and knowledge about the
understanding of space, architectural ideas, building techniques and detailing.
One of the case studies is the Minka of
the Tsunashima family. The traditional, rural
farmhouse features a beautiful wooden post and
beam construction with its joinery, a thatched
roof, a large earthen work floor and elegant
sequences of wooden floored rooms.
Together with Jenny Fausa Torvik.
The theory work lead to four booklets, which can be found at the bottom of this page.
